Best Vegan Pies: Winner 2023

Pies with Oomph

Delicious. Flavoursome, satisfying, not at all dry and the wholemeal pastry is crisp and light. (l’ve no idea how Clive manages THIS!) I usually cook from scratch but treat us to these now and then.

Best Nut Roast

Had almost given up trying to find a decent nut roast but thought I’d give this one a try and so glad I did ! Delicious combination of nuts and seeds – will definitely be a regular purchase.

Vegan, Gluten free and Delicious

How can anyone be Vegan and Gluten Free? This is how. Tastes great.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find Clive’s products?

Clive’s products can be found nationwide in the plant-based sections of Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. If you prefer home delivery, try Ocado, Abel & Cole or Vegankind. You can also find us in the fridge or freezer of most good health food shops.

Why does my Clive’s food vary?

We lovingly prepare our products to the same size and standard every time however, as a handmade product, there is often some variation. We never use ingredients that we wouldn’t serve to our own friends and families at home and think it’s only right to love plants in all their natural glory, which can mean a healthy mix of shapes and sizes.

Why have you moved away from organic ingredients?

We’ve faced numerous challenges with our organic supply chain, making it difficult to maintain the consistency and reliability you deserve. We’ve struggled to get hold of organic ingredients from our suppliers – leading to last-minute supermarket runs to meet our organic promise and, in some cases, halting production altogether. This has unfortunately become unsustainable for us as a business, and we’ve had to make the
decision to make this switch.

But it’s not all doom and gloom… in fact, we’re excited. Moving to a non-organic range means we can focus even more on delivering great-tasting, high quality products full of wholesome ingredients you can still feel good about eating. We’re doubling down on flavour, quality, and reliability to ensure every bite of Clive’s is just as delicious as the last.

Can I eat my Clive’s….

Cold? – yes, you sure can! All our products are cooked and ready to eat.
Defrosted cold? – yes absolutely! Although there is a bit more moisture as a result of the freezing process, so you may want to heat it up as per the instructions on the pack.
Defrosted and left chilled? – yes, as long the frozen date hasn’t been exceeded and its kept below 5 degrees then its fine for 3 days.
Microwaved? – hmmm never the best idea for pastry products, we understand sometimes needs must but for best results we’d always recommend popping it in the oven if you can.

What shall I serve with my Clive’s?

Every Clive’s product comes with a delicious serving suggestion on the pack and you can also check out our social channels for more tips and ideas. Our pies, tarts and nut roast are seriously yummy all on their own and make the perfect addition to any plate of food. We’ve seen and eaten every combo with our Clive’s hot and cold. From comforting roasted veg to a fresh green salad, literally anything goes. All our pies have their own sauciness, so you can decide to add your own gravy or other sauces as you wish.

How does Clive’s make food safely?

At Clive’s, we manufacture to a high standard of food safety, externally audited annually and verified by BRCGS. We also work with our local trading standards and environmental health officers who inspect our business and provide commissioned advice as and when required.

Why does Clive’s use Palm Oil?

Palm oil provides the best texture for vegan pastry and is more suitable than other vegetable oils. We continue to use palm until we can find an alternative that is as high yielding, sustainably managed and traceable. There are different grades of palm oil (as defined by the RSPO), we only purchase the highest levels achievable, which are Identity Preserved and Segregated, which means it can be traced back to the farm where it is actually grown.

We source our palm oil from Colombia due to their commitment to sustainable
production. This is supported by the country signing a zero-deforestation commitment in order to distance itself from the environmental problems occurring in Southeast Asia.

Are Clive’s products impacted by the new High Fat, Sugar & Salt (HFSS) legislation?

Savoury pastry products are not subject to the HFSS restrictions, as they are not considered meal centres. This includes all ambient, chilled, and frozen, processed and ready to eat pastry pies, pasties, sausage rolls, tarts, and quiches.

How recyclable and compostable is Clive’s packaging?

All Clive’s food comes in a completely compostable cardboard outer sleeve or box. Many products come with no inner packaging at all, like our wholemeal pies and nut roast which are robust enough to cope with the journey to you. Other pies, like our gluten free range, need the support of a little recyclable foil to help keep them in shape.

What happened to the paper trays?

After dabbling in both paper and foil, we’ve found that foil is the most robust for the more delicate pastries. It is easier to clean, infinitely recyclable (without loss of quality), cooks better and holds shape. Our aluminium foil meets the required standards for chemical composition of semi-products used for the fabrication of containers for use in contact with food. What does that all mean? It means we fully comply with European
Standard EN602:2004.

Who the heck is Clive, anyway?

The original pie-oneer, Clive kicked of this delicious plant-packed journey in the late eighties delivering pies on his bike in Devon. Find out more about Clive and his continued inspiration over on our People page.
